I was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, where I went to public schools. I received a degree in English Literature from the University of Southern California. During my senior year at USC, I was lucky enough to enroll in a short story class taught by T. Coraghessan Boyle, which introduced me to fiction writers who became lifelong favorites, and helped me realize my own love of storytelling.
After college, I went to law school, and received my JD from Santa Clara University. For the last twenty years or so, my law practice has been devoted to writing appeals for indigent criminal defendants.
I have always wanted to write novels, and in particular this novel. In between the births of my fourth and fifth children, I began writing in earnest, and resumed my studies by taking classes through the Stanford Continuing Education program. I live in Northern California with my husband, Craig, and our five children
