You And I Will Meet Again
- Tom Petty
You and I will meet again
When we're least expecting it
One day in some far off place
I will recognize your face
I won't say goodbye my friend
For you and I will meet again
I heard you singing to no one
I saw you dancing all alone
One day you belonged to me
Next day I just wouldn't know
Someday all the rules will bend
And you and I will meet again
I've got a feeling
I've got a feeling so strong
Maybe someday our paths will cross
A red-winged hawk is circling
The blacktop stretches out for days
How could I get so close to you
And still feel so far away?
I hear a voice come on the wind
Sayin' you and I will meet again
I don't know how, I don't know when
But you and I will meet again
Fred Zulfa Memorial Scholarship Fund
In 2012, along with my friends and classmates Andrea Zander Norman, Ann Johansen Warren, and Judge David Zulfa, we started the Fred Zulfa Memorial Scholarship at West High School in Bakersfield in memory of our friend and brother. The Fred Zulfa Memorial Scholarship is now the biggest scholarship at West High. In our first year, we self-funded a small scholarship, and last year, thanks to the support of our friends and classmates, we were able to award $10,000.00.
Andrea, Ann, David and I all graduated from West High in the 1980’s. Currently, over 80% of West High students qualify for the national school lunch program (which provides free or reduced price meals for low income families). Since starting the scholarship, we’ve discovered that there is both need, and a significant amount of worthy recipients at West High—kids who against the odds and with little financial assistance, are nonetheless college-bound.
In selecting recipients, we look for students who have equal amounts ambition and heart. We are not as concerned with GPA as we are with what we learn about them from their essays. Because Fred would love it, we ask the applicants to write about their favorite movie characters and song lyrics that inspire them. These topics can tell you a lot about a person!
A little about Fred: Fred was a key member of the 1982 California State Championship speech and debate team at West High, and was subsequently awarded a debate team scholarship at USC (where we both graduated in 1986). Fred was funny and brilliant and compassionate and kind, and although we lost him in 1992, he is still thought of every single day.
Additional information about the scholarship can be found on Facebook.
